(KUTV) Octavia Spencer describes Roberta, her character in "Gifted," as “a close friend and confidant” to Frank (Chris Evans), a single man trying to make sure that his brilliant niece isn’t forced to grow up too fast.
To connect with her character Spencer thought about her brothers and sisters.
“If I lost any one of them I would want to be there for their children,” she says.
Spencer’s character puts a lot of stock in extended families and seeing that Frank is alone she is quick to try and fill in that gap in his and his niece’s lives.
One of my favorite scenes in the film finds Spencer and Mckenna Grace, the young actress who plays Frank’s niece, dancing around and singing in Roberta’s apartment.
“There’s something wrong with you if you don’t have fun with Mckenna,” she says.
Spencer recalls numerous stuffed animals being placed just offer camera for the scene because her young co-star wanted an audience.
“No one saw them except for the two of us and she performed for her stuffed animals. It was pretty great,” she says with her trademark smile.
"Gifted" expands nationwide on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
