'Hunger Games' prequel hits shelves Tuesday; takes place 64 years before original novel

WASHINGTON (SBG) —Suzanne Collins' final installment of "The Hunger Games" was released more than a decade ago.

And for fans of the series, this week is a big one. "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," a prequel written by the bestselling author, will be released Tuesday, May 19.

Publisher Scholastic said the new release takes place 64 years before the original novel, which was on The New York Times Best Seller list for more than 260 weeks.

More than 100 million copies of all three books in the trilogy have been sold in print and digital formats worldwide.
