Welcome to the mythical place known as October. I hope it treats us well. Here's a look at what Netflix thinks you'll want to watch this month.
And here's a look at what I'll be watching. Outside of the "Great British Baking Show," of course.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Taika Waitti's "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" tells the story of Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison ), a foster teen, who is sent to a remote farm after burning his way through every foster family he has been place with. There in the middle of nowhere, Ricky Baker finds something resembling happiness with the not-exactly-warm Bella and Hec, her grumpy husband. When Bella dies, Hec tells Ricky Baker than he will have to return to child services. So Ricky Baker does what he does best and makes a scene and the adventures begin. (Avail. 10/1/20)
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
I love Aardman Animations films. The studio is best known for their films and television programs featuring Wallace and Gromit and "Chicken Run." "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" is a delightful, silly romp that follows a misguided group of amateur pirates who have their hearts set on winning Pirate of the Year competition. (Avail. 10/1/20)
David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet
A documentary where the legendary broadcaster and natural historian David Attenborough tells the story of his life? Yes, please. (Avail. 10/4/20)
The Forty-Year-Old Version
"The Forty-Year-Old Version" is a film I caught at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of the year. It tells the story of Radha (writer/director/producer Radha Blank), an award-winning playwright who has fallen out of favor, who decides to revitalize her life by becoming a rapper. It's really good. (Avail. 10/9/20)
The Haunting of Bly Manor
Mike Flanagan returns with "The Haunting of Bly Manor," a follow up to his popular adaptation of "The Haunting of Hill House." This time Flanagan looks to "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James for inspiration. (Avail. 10/9/20)
"La Révolution" sees French aristocracy infected with a disease known as "blue blood" that drives them to kill the lower classes. A reimagined French Revolution soon follows. (Avail. 10/16/20)
English filmmaker Ben Wheatley ("High-Rise") adapts Daphne du Maurier's classic 1938 novel (which Alfred Hitchcock adapted in 1940). This version of the psychological thriller stars Lily James as Mrs. de Winter, a the newlywed woman haunted by her husband's dead first wife. (Avail. 10/21/20)
The Queen's Gambit
Anya Taylor-Joy stars as a young orphan with a remarkable talent for chess and an addiction to tranquilizers. Yeah, I guess I'd look forward to watching Taylor-Joy in anything. (Avail. 10/23/20)
