Marvel and Freeform lifted the lid on two new projects aimed at young adult audiences set to hit TV screens in 2018 during the cable network’s upfront presentation Wednesday.

The first trailer was released for “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger,” featuring Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph as two teens dealing with mysteriously linked superpowers. Holt’s Tandy Bowen emits light daggers and Joseph’s Tyrone Johnson can engulf people in darkness.

“They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging,” a press release stated.

The series is based on characters created in the early 1980s. In the comics, Tandy and Tyrone are runaways who obtain their powers when they are forced to test experimental synthetic drugs.

It’s unclear from the trailer exactly where their powers come from in this version, but Freeform has ordered ten hour-long episodes that will presumably explain it early next year. Joe Pokaski (“Underground”) serves as showrunner and Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Love & Basketball”) directed the pilot.

Also on Wednesday, the characters starring in “Marvel’s New Warriors” were revealed. Based on a team of teen heroes created in 1989 and revamped a few times since then, the half-hour show is described as “Marvel’s first foray into comedy for a television series.”

“Not quite super, not yet heroes, ‘Marvel’s New Warriors’ is about that time in your life when you first enter adulthood and feel like you can do everything and nothing at once – except in this world, bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates,” the studio explained in a statement.

The team of six heroes chosen for the show includes a mix of old New Warriors, newer New Warriors, and, somewhat more obscurely, Great Lakes Avengers. Also, a squirrel.

When the show premieres in 2018, audiences will be introduced to Night Thrasher, Mister Immortal, Microbe, Debrii, Speedball, Squirrel Girl, and her pet/sidekick Tippy Toe.

Kevin Biegel (“Cougar Town”) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Cast members have not been announced.
